Required Vaccinations and Health Checks
For the protection of the chimps, we must insist that each person who participates in any of our one-on-one chimp experiences (Chimpanzee Integration Programme or Caregiver-For-A-Day) submit proof of specific vaccinations and health checks. These inoculations and tests should be readily available from your local health provider. While we realize that this is more than what is recommended for visiting Africa, these vaccinations/negative test results are necessary to have contact with the chimps on Ngamba Island. This is to protect them from illnesses that you may bring to the island. All of our chimpanzees receive yearly health checks and have been tested/vaccinated for the listed diseases and have also tested negative to the HIV virus.

Required Vaccinations and Health Checks

All vaccinations must be at least two weeks old prior to your arrival on the island as this is the length of time necessary for your immunity levels to react.

We cannot stress enough the importance of having all the supporting documentation for your health checks. Before leaving your doctor’s office/laboratory, please make sure that you check to make sure that your vaccinations/test results are recorded correctly. Unfortunately, we will not be able to approve anyone for contact with a Ngamba chimp who has failed to provide proof of the required health checks. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you scan/email your records to us directly in advance of your visit for clarification and in good time to enable more vaccines/tests to be administered if warranted. Send your records to director@ngambaisland.org.
